For High-Risk SMBs, Stripe Pain Starts With Payment Access

Payments Dive reported that 25 state attorneys general and New York City sent letters to major card and payment companies, including Stripe, PayPal, Sezzle and Block, asking them to address unlawful e-cigarette and nicotine sales. The story is about youth protection, but for small merchants it points to a broader operating issue: payment access is becoming more conditional, more scrutinized, and harder to explain.

Stripe is often the easiest modern payment stack to start with. The harder part comes after volume arrives. Merchants then discover that risk classification, payout holds, reserve requirements, and category review matter as much as API quality. For businesses in tobacco-adjacent products, supplements, adult content, ticketing, preorders, or cross-border fulfillment, the question is not only whether onboarding works. It is whether the provider is willing to support the category over time.

That is why “Stripe alternative” is not always a complaint about Stripe. Often it is a search for operational redundancy. A merchant may be happy with the product, yet still need a second route before a review interrupts payroll, supplier payments, or ad spend.

The practical move is to treat payment access like a core vendor risk. Ask about restricted categories, reserves, rolling holds, payout delays, dispute thresholds, and appeal timelines before scale. Keep refund terms, shipping timelines, billing descriptors, and evidence files consistent with how the business actually operates.

Stripe can still be the right starting point. The mistake is assuming instant onboarding means permanent acceptance.
