Shopify and Sezzle Show Why Checkout Choice Matters

Payments Dive reported that Shopify failed to fully dismiss Sezzle’s lawsuit, with a judge allowing parts of Sezzle’s monopoly and anticompetitive-conduct claims to proceed. For small merchants, the legal detail matters less than the operating lesson: the platform that controls checkout can shape payment choice.

Shopify is attractive because it simplifies commerce. Storefront, inventory, marketing, payment, and fulfillment can sit in one workflow. But when a platform’s own BNPL or wallet becomes the default path, convenience can quietly reduce merchant flexibility. The default may be useful. The risk is that alternatives become harder to compare, harder to route, or more expensive to maintain.

BNPL makes the trade-off visible. A button on the checkout page affects financing approval, conversion, refund handling, dispute exposure, fees, and customer data. If one option receives better placement or cleaner integration, shopper behavior can shift quickly.

The merchant question is simple: can the checkout be changed without breaking the business? Merchants should know whether third-party options are allowed, whether non-default processors trigger extra fees, and whether transaction, refund, subscription, and dispute data can be exported cleanly.

The best payment partner does not just add another button. It helps the merchant understand cost, liability, data, and exit paths before the platform relationship becomes too hard to unwind.
