FedNow Cross-Border Payments Move Toward Intermediaries
FedNow cross-border payments are not becoming global overnight. The more important development is that the U.S. instant payment system is being redesigned so private-sector providers can connect the domestic leg to an international leg. Payments Dive reported on August 10 that Stripe, Visa, Wise and industry groups support a Federal Reserve proposal to let FedNow participants use intermediaries for transfers through the service. In practical terms, the FedNow change would let a U.S. bank handle the domestic instant settlement while an intermediary handles the correspondent or international portion.
That matters because cross-border money movement is rarely one rail. A U.S. payout to a supplier, a refund to an overseas customer or a marketplace settlement often combines domestic clearing, compliance screening, FX, beneficiary routing and reconciliation. Today those pieces are often buried inside a provider dashboard. A more explicit FedNow intermediary model could make the chain easier to document and automate.
For Chinese AI companies, cross-border SaaS teams and digital merchants selling into the U.S., this is not a reason to abandon card acceptance. Cards will remain essential for checkout. But the back office may change faster than the front end. Merchant payouts, refund handling, vendor payments and treasury movement can shift toward account-to-account rails where speed, data quality and lower failure ambiguity matter more than card network acceptance.
The merchant action is straightforward: ask providers how they will support instant account rails, not only how they process cards. A good cross-border stack should show which payment used card, ACH, FedNow, wire, local wallet or stablecoin settlement; what data came with the transfer; and how the event lands in finance systems.
What it means for your business
- Evaluate U.S. account receipts, refunds, supplier payouts and subscription collections separately from card acceptance.
- Ask payment providers about ISO 20022 data, payment-purpose fields and reconciliation exports.
- Build a backup mix across ACH, FedNow, cards and cross-border payout rails before volume spikes.
